…how time flies!!! Esky is now 11mths and growing nicely. She is maturing into a very nice, high drive female rottweiler. She has good substance and nice head type, very dark eyes and good markings.

Her character is strong and typical of a rottweiler and is already very territorial. I am confident she will make an excellent representative of the breed and will play her role on propelling our breeding program into the future.

Esky is the last daughter of Rotvel Cors Au, and certainly pays homage to that magnificent dam line hailing from the legendary Rotvel kennels!!

On the 3rd December I travelled to Canberra, ACT to visit some good friends in the K9 world and some of the Seeuferhause clan that find themselves up there, amongst others; Seeuferhause Buddy.

He is going great guns!!! A big thank you to my good friend Peter Sutton for the excellent job he is doing in raising Buddy. He has undergone a super socialising and development program that has brought him into adolescence in the best possible way!

Buddy is everything that he showed as the “spunky” little pup that left Seeuferhause kennels about a year ago. He is intense, focussed and strong. His prey / play drives are very good and his grip is everything you can wish for. Check the photos and look at the likeness to his father Rocky.

Buddy is the latest addition to the Seeuferhause kennel and a product of our many years of research and desire to bring the best of the working rottweiler world to Australia.

Buddy had a fairly rough introduction to this world, for reasons unknown to us, proven mother Jutta rejected this litter of puppies, forcing us to hand feed and then Buddy’s progress was hampered further by an infection. True to the fighting qualities of his pedigree he perserved and is now growing at rapid rate and has become a typical pain in the backside high drive working rottweiler.

Buddy is a super working prospect for our kennel. His prey drive is intense and his grip is fast, full and committed. Buddy’s father Rocky was nicknamed the VIPER at his schutzhund club in the USA; seeing Buddy launch himself for a committed strike on the rag/tug I can see where the name came from. To say I am pleased that this quality has been handed down is an understatement. In addition to the high drive Buddy is also environmentally secure and displays some elements of social dominance which I hope continue to develop as he matures.

Tracking is a complicated discipline but Kris has a way of making it quite simple to understand. Try the easy to follow steps and before you know it you and your pooch will be tracking with the best of them.

I had the priviledge of being selected as one of the ‘proof readers” of the first version of this book, and whilst it has taken some time to publishing, the final product is exceptional to say the least.

Whilst the book is predominantly dealing with tracking, the concepts discussed apply to other disciplines of K9 training also. I am convinced that you will find this an indispensible training aid.

We have been attempting this breeding for at least 2yrs now. We had a successful breeding the first time when Zena was confirmed pregnant however aborted the pregnancy in the devastating heat of Black Saturday.

To say that we are excited by this breeding is an understatement; we know what Clyde produces and we know what Zena looks like…..if the two can come together it will surely be spectacular.

I trust this edition of Seeuferhause News find all and sundry well. Those of us in Melbourne are struggling with one of the coldest and wettest winters in recent memory. Dogs don’t seem to mind it though – there are a couple of mud monsters in the yard to prove it!!!

WEBSITE – the website is going extremely well and is bringing Seeuferhause to the world. Our traffic is excellent and we have experienced unprecedented enquiries on puppies and litter plans. It really is very exciting for us to know that people really are interested in what we are putting together at Seeuferhause. We get a real kick out of the comments left on the various pages of the website…keep them coming!

LITTERS – the last few months have seen the “Y” and “Z” litters come and go.

Y Litter – Clyde vom Tanneneck (imp GMY) X Von Zennith Shaki.
1 male – York, and 3 females – Yill, Yessie and Yves. All of these little guys were substantial, outgoing and quietly confident. Typical of Clyde puppies they are developing slowly but surely. They will grow to be large rottweilers with stable, confident temperaments. Yill, Yves and York have been placed in excellent family environments, and Yessie has been placed with our good friend Jodi Miller. Jodi played a pivotal role in the socialising and development of Shakira as a puppy and as such this valuable comparison between mother and daughter will give us significant insight to the bloodline. Jodi’s feedback will be crucial to the future decisions with regards to the development of the line. The early indications are that the Y litter are a definite improvement on the dam and her litter mates. This current Y litter demonstrates higher levels of confidence, self assuredness and definitely higher levels of drive.

2 males – Zooka and Zeuss, 1 female – Zoe. This litter was perhaps my most anticipated litter yet and it did not disappoint. The puppies were very confident, outgoing, inquisitive and self assured. They demonstrated significant levels of working drive and outstanding nerve strength. Nothing seemed to faze these guys. Loud noises, big dogs, people, large objects, trucks, wood splitters and the list goes on…perhaps the most exciting thing about this litter is that they have all ended up in “working” homes. Zooka is living with the guys from the K9 Company, Zeuss with an NDTF graduate and Zoe with a schutzhund club member from NSW. We are in constant contact with these guys and the feedback is excellent and it would seem that these pups are fulfilling our expectations, and then some. PLANNED LITTERS – Over the next couple of months we are hoping to see the following litters become a reality.

1. Allgemein Kai X Von Zennith Falke – this litter will produce large, substantial rottweilers with the old fashioned temperament that we all long for. Kai is line bred 3-2 on Noris vom Gruntenblick and Falke carries the lines of Graf vom Gruntenblick and the famous Bodo vom Oberhausener Norden. – UNFORTUNATELY THIS LITTER HAS NOT COME INTO FRUITION.

2. Clyde vom Tanneneck (imp GMY) X Guardstarz Ronja – it is anticipated that this litter will produce substantial, highly athletic rottweilers. Working drives will be very high. Clyde needs no introduction and Ronja is one of our young upcoming bitches; she is a daughter of Allgemein Kai and carries the old Guardstarz lines on her mother side. – UPDATE: 2 males & 1 female

3. Boris Z Lebedova Dvora (imp Slovakia) X Seeuferhause Echo – this litter will produce very typey rottweilers, good substance, dark colours and very athletic. Suitable as strong family companions and or working applications. – Update: Puppies born yesterday, more information soon.

All breedings have been completed and pregnancy is confirmed. Puppies from 1 & 2, are due at the end of September and #3, mid to late October.

STUD ACTIVITY – The Seeuferhause stud dogs have also been busy in the last month or so. Doc, Boris and Clyde have all been bred to bitches owned by other kennels.

The (2) breedings that in my mind are the standouts of this bunch is Doc to a Kai daughter owned by the Von Koutz kennel and Boris to a Rotvel bitch owned by Joy Belles.

We have also completed the semen collection for Boris, and I am very happy to confirm that, he provided a sample that was able to be split into 5 breeding units @ 85% motility – an excellent sample for a dog of 3-5yrs let alone nearly 9!!

PUPPY PROGRAM – Keep an eye on our website over the next couple of weeks for the launch of our Puppy Program. At Seeuferhause we are firm believers that the early foundation / socialising of your puppy is the most critical thing you can complete for your dog. This early activity will set the foundation for your dog’s life and will more than likely provide the framework of how they will deal with things for the rest of their life. It is also the case that whilst many people claim to know what to do through this early critical phase, in reality most don’t know much at all. Given that we also aim to produce dogs with higher working drives we also understand that these higher drive puppies may need more attention at times to ensure their proper upbringing.

So, after much consideration we have decided to provide our puppy buyers with a voucher (fully paid by Seeuferhause) for 2 sessions with a qualified K9 behaviourist/trainer. The program aims to provide new puppy people with all the required information to allow them to provide their puppy with the best upbringing/socialising possible. It will also provide an avenue for Q&A and further formal training if required with a highly qualified person.

THE FONZE – …and now for a good news story. A recent post on our website spoke of the plight of a male rottweiler by the name of Rotvel The Fonze http://www.seeuferhauserottweilers.com.au/2010/07/15/male-rottweiler-for-adoption; Unfortunately The Fonze had fallen on hard times and both myself and Joy Belles of Rotvel Rottweilers were called upon to rescue this boy. Anyway, cut a long story short the Fonze has landed on his feet with a fantastic young couple in the Melbourne suburb of South Morang and by all reports is settling in famously. They are even attending obedience / dog training classes with the K9 Company run by Catherine Saunders and Brent Dry.

PHILOSOPHICAL DISCUSSION – In the previous newsletter edition I posed a question on “Sharpness and its place in the Modern Rottweiler”. I would like to thank the people that have contributed to this discussion either directly or via the Specialist K9 Forum.

IS THERE A PLACE FOR SHARPNESS IN THE MODERN WORKING ROTTWEILER?

A paper to provoke thought and discussion within the canine community by Laurie Boutzetis of Seeuferhause Rottweilers, Australia.
In order for us to truly examine this interesting topic, it is first necessary that we have a clear understanding of exactly what sharpness in a dog means. To these ends the Compact Oxford English Dictionary contains the following definition(s) of ‘sharp’:

SHARP:
• adjective
1 having a cutting or piercing edge or point.
2 tapering to a point or edge.
3 sudden and marked: a sharp increase.
4 making a sudden change of direction.
5 clearly defined.
6 producing a sudden, piercing sensation or effect: a sharp pain.
7 quick to understand, notice, or respond.
8 quick to take advantage, especially in a dishonest way.
9 (of a food, taste, or smell) acidic and intense. (of a sound) sudden and penetrating. critical or hurtful. informal smart and stylish. (of musical sound) above true or normal pitch. after a noun (of a note or key) higher by a semitone than a specified note or key.
• adverb
1 precisely: at 7.30 sharp.
2 suddenly or abruptly.
3 above the true or normal pitch of musical sound.
• noun

I have highlighted the definitions that I feel are most directly applicable to this discussion. In order to further understand the topic I shall share a practical example of how sharpness is manifested in a working rottweiler, and how it can be both useful and potentially hazardous; a double edged sword if you like.

In 2008 I received a visit from a photographer employed by our local paper. He was there to take some pictures for a story the paper was running on our kennel, Seeuferhause Rottweilers. After our initial introductions he requested to have my daughter and a puppy pose for photos.

My daughter Angelina, who was 6 at the time, was holding an 8 week old Seeuferhause Delta. A few snaps later the photographer asked for me to bring out one of our adult dogs to take a ‘family” shot, so I brought out Doc (Siegertal Urri). As Doc and I reached where Angelina was sitting with Delta, Doc gave them both a quick sniff and an affectionate lick on the face and I placed him in a ‘drop’ next to them, with me in between to balance the shot.

The photographer was busy fiddling with the camera, and all was calm, tranquil, the birds were singing and the bees buzzing; I busied myself fixing my daughter’s hair…and Doc exploded like an atom bomb! Doc was aggressively launching in full flight across the front of Angelina and Delta; I felt my hand being crushed by the pressure of the leash as I squeezed my grip with all my might, and in an instant I popped the leash and brought the dog under immediate and total control.

Whilst all this commotion was happening (I perceived it in slow motion, like a movie) I heard an horrified shriek and a deep groan, followed closely by a bodily thud, and realised that the photographer was sent reeling backwards by Doc’s protective behaviour, subsequently landing heavily on his back on the ground.
My quick reaction to Doc’s behaviour had been quick, and not perhaps not surprisingly I reacted equally quickly at the lip; “What are you doing?!” I exclaimed at the now horizontal and ashen faced photographer. After what seemed like minutes the guy gathered his breath, picked himself up, brushed himself down, and mumbled sheepishly “Errr… I was just trying to bring your daughter closer to you for the shot….”

So here we have the essence of sharpness:
-sudden and marked;
-a sudden change of direction;
-quick to understand, notice or respond;
-sudden and abrupt and my favourite,
-producing a sudden, piercing sensation or effect, a sharp pain!!

The dog’s reality; a stranger was acting inappropriately, and potentially aggressively, towards my daughter. The greater the instinctive value of an object, the more protective a dog will be towards it. And for the record Doc and Angelina share the very closest of relationships.

The human reality; it was a harmless photographer doing his job by putting his hand on Angelina’s shoulder and moving her closer towards me, in order to make a better photograph.

Despite the possible ramifications of this scenario my view is still an overwhelming yes in regards to the question of whether sharpness has its place in the temperament of the modern rottweiler.

A rottweiler is a guarding breed, despite its boundless utility and ability to track, herd, draught, etc. My firm belief is that a rottweiler cannot perform the duty of guarding and or being a family protector without a level of genetic sharpness present in its character or temperament.

Now for all the dogsport oriented rottweiler fans out there, yes, you can have an extremely powerful working dog without these levels of sharpness. You cannot however realistically expect a dog lacking in genetic sharpness to perform so instinctively and intuitively in real world scenarios such as the above account describes, especially without specialised training. Certainly, there are other elements of temperament at play, but that is outside the realms of this paper.

There also comes with these more extreme working temperaments a greatly increased personal and social responsibility for breeders and handlers alike; dogs with levels of sharpness like that possessed by Doc and his half brother Allgemein Kai are not for inexperienced handlers. This style of dog typically makes an excellent family dog, in the right circumstances and with appropriate leadership, management, training, and understanding of canine behaviour. Clearly, it is the human element that makes the difference in these animals having a productive place in society.

This noble breed, the Rottweiler, along with other working breeds such as the Doberman and German Shepherd established themselves as superior family protectors over the years through the presence of genetic sharpness in their character. In addition to this, the breed suitability (ZTP) and advanced BST (Korung) tests went to protracted lengths to measure and capture within these breeds the correct degree of sharpness present in every great working dog’s temperament.

Dogs with pronounced sharpness, where it is accompanied by the other necessary working qualities such as thick nerve, courage, high drives, social dominance, and hardness, were traditionally the preferred breeding options in all the working breeds. This was the basis of the true Rottweiler character; the very character that created the breed’s reputation.

Below is a table of the characteristics that used to be evaluated in ZTP’s and Korung’s in 1971, 1983, and the present day; for comparative purposes I am providing the Korung evaluation for the famous Kai von Tengen; sire of the even more famous Falko, Graf and Gary vom Gruntenblick; Bulli vom Hungerbuhl, and also the current day champion Balco aus der Espenstatte. This is not a comparison on which dog is the best of the 3, rather a comparison of their breed suitability evaluations.

Medium sized, powerful, compact, spacious movement, strong body frame, very attentive, self confident but low excitability, a pronounced fighting drive, very hard.

It is interesting that ‘grip behaviour’ was not something formally evaluated in days gone by, and in my personal view is one of the more valuable innovations in temperament evaluation of working dogs. ‘Grip behaviour’ reveals a great deal about the dog’s frame of mind during engagement of the decoy, and that insight is an absolute necessity.

In practical working terms a chewy or restless grip is typically going to cause more damage than a firm, calm grip in a ‘real life’, scenario based, live bite situation. This being so, a calm, full grip signifies superior frame of mind, confidence and stability under stress.

In reviewing the above Korung / ZTP results you will notice a significant shift in the elements being assessed by the judges over time, and an even more significant shift in the specificity of the terminology/language used.

Sharpness along with other temperament elements must not be assessed on its own – it must be understood and read in context with other elements of working temperament as mentioned above. Many people’s view, including my own, is that the ideal mix was that embodied in Kai von Tengen; high levels of fearlessness, self confidence, confidence and sharpness with moderate levels of excitability and suspicion.

The language used in evaluating temperament in days gone by seems to be simpler and more reflective of the cultural/social attitudes of that era. Political correctness and social responsibility had not yet taken hold in the 70’s so use of terminology such as:’ pushy’, ‘stroke and stick ready’, ‘pronounced protection’ and ‘fighting drive’ were the norm. These terms have been replaced with ‘ability to take’ and ‘readiness for use’ – much more sterile and less emotive language. Can you imagine the uproar if you used a term like ‘stroke and stick ready’ at a dinner party? You could bank on not receiving an invite next time.

….current attitudes
I have drawn on several sources of information in collating this article. Breed standards, Korung reports, as well as my personal points of view and those of other working dog enthusiasts and trainers. The general consensus is that sharpness is a highly desirable trait so long as insecurity, fear, volatility, weak nerve or excessive defence drives are present in the sharp dog. Conversely, social dominance and self assuredness are typically considered very desirable when combined with sharpness.

As stated in my opening paragraph, understanding the definition ‘sharpness’ is the key to answering the question regarding its place in the modern Rottweiler temperament. A good friend of mine, Mr Brad Griggs expressed it this way “Sharpness describes the speed of the dog’s reaction to a given stimuli; fight, flight or freeze, sharpness only concerns itself with the speed of the reaction itself. The nature of the reaction the dog displays is based on the other elements of the dogs’ character/temperament.”

A socially dominant or aggressive dog with thick nerve will react with aggression and strength and engage any threat with great self belief. A fearful dog may flee or shy away. Both dogs with the exact same level of sharpness react totally differently, even though the speed of their reaction to the same stimulus is exactly the same.

Now, as per my earlier example, a dog with high levels of sharpness in the wrong hands can be a definite social liability. This is due to their propensity to react very quickly. Combine the sharpness with high levels of social dominance, aggression and fight drive and you have an explosive package that is definitely only suitable for the experienced handler.

So, dogs with this level of reactionary speed are not likely to suit the average family looking for a ‘pet’; I must qualify this assertion at this point by stating clearly that most of the dogs of the past of this type were in fact family dogs but, it would seem society and attitudes were different then. People seem to have been harder, more robust in nature, stronger in their leadership and discipline, and more personally responsible in days gone by (and also less litigious)…..but that is another discussion all together.

Unfortunately the general public are not inclined towards these types of dogs, and with the current social attitudes towards animal control, over regulation, and political correctness, there seems to be no room for this type of animal. This is a great tragedy for the modern working dog, as the same elements of the character that brought these breeds to prominence as our guardians and protectors are the same ones that are now being frowned upon and labelled as undesirable and unacceptable.

Should this trend of misrepresenting, misunderstanding, and failing to breed towards these great traits continue it will be a very short period of time until we will see these working type breeds become nothing more than a tragic caricature of their former glorious selves.

Working dog breeders must exercise the utmost caution to ensure that sharpness is one of the traits that are preserved in their bloodlines – once it is gone it will most likely be gone forever, and remain irretrievable. We should all be extremely concerned when we see descendants of the once powerful working lines, a mere 2 or 3 generations removed, that are in no way representative of those lines in any way other than the head type, angulation or other conformation expression.

For the Rottweiler today, these attitudes have manifested themselves as a clear, very German Shepherd style delineation within the rottweiler community between working dogs and show dogs.

Woking rottweiler breeders are few and far between, despite many claims by show breeders to the contrary; even in Germany you can count the number of working rottweiler breeders on your fingers (without using them twice), and this is the situation in the home of the ADRK!

Sure, today’s lifestyles, income earning activities and social structures require less working dog numbers (in the minds of the masses at least), but if we do not preserve the working Rottweiler it will soon disappear. It would be shameful for this to happen. We must take a leaf out of Japanese culture and their return to the martial arts (banned for a number of years prior to WWII) and their preservation as cultural treasures in the post war era – without this significant change in mind set, all those wonderful disciplines would be nothing more than drawings and writing in books of history.

Do not let our wonderful working dogs become extinct…..preserve the traits that make a good working dog!!!

Yes, an overwhelming YES; sharpness definitely has a place in the character make up of the modern rottweiler and working dog at large – it’s not the only trait but it is a very important one.

One such process is that of, microchipping. This however poses an issue that as breeders of performance animals we need to be mindful of – PAIN. The microchipping process is a painful one, if you dont believe me grab a spike of some sort and push it under your skin……Yikes!!!!

I believe that this process is best completed at the second vaccination and not the first. We generally vaccinate the 1st time at 6weeks, and this is a neccessity so that we can commence the socialising programme of the puppies, however microchipping is not. If you also think about the entire vaccination event, car trip, new room, strangers handling the pups etc you can forgive the little beasts the microchipping till a later date.

As such we have made arrangements with our veterinary clinic (Fawkner Veterinary Hospital – Dr Tony Meese) for microchipping at our cost, for all Seeuferhause puppies at the second vaccination. A further benefit of this is the microchip is automatically in the name of the current owner of the dog as opposed to the breeders name – history shows that people very rarely change the ownership details on microchip databases leading to a wild goose chase if something untoward were to happen.

We have now successfully trialled this initiative with our U and V litters, and it will be standard practise from here on. Another benefit for us is the feedback that we receive from the vet on how our pups are travelling.

DNA
The topic of DNA is now common place in most discussions with various breeders and it is certainly a process that is here to stay and in my belief will be mandatory in due course.

We are currently investigating the options available to us and in due course all of our breeding stock will be DNA profiled. As an extension of this, any stud dog that may be considered for inclusion in our program at that time will also need to be DNA profiled in order to be approved.

Elektra, was sold on breeders terms as a puppy however her owners were not able to keep her due a change in their living circumstances. She has been socialised extensively is a very confident young girl. She will excel in any type of training/work that someone would want.
